SCRIPT
It’s finally here! Thank you all so much for your patience. We’re just as EXCITEd as you are, haha.
From this point onwards, though, we won’t be releasing this fast. Doing Ex-Aid at this speed every week for the next year would take a lot out of us. We should be releasing by Wednesday from now on!
Regarding the Gamer Driver’s GASHATTO/GASHOON/GACHAAAN noises – translating them into something related to the original clicking (a game cartridge in) onomatopoeia gave us a bit of trouble. We’re definitely more than welcome to suggestions regarding this.
Also, it’s corny, but I really want to thank absolutely everyone who has shown interest in us so far. All the encouragement has been a huge confidence boost for us, and all the criticism has helped us remain grounded and focus on what kind of translation we want to deliver.
We’ve read everything you guys have said about us and we’ve taken it all on board, so I hope the result of that is something you can all enjoy! We also hope over the next year we can grow our skills into something worthy of all your expectations! With that in mind, we’re open to all suggestions and corrections about anything. We want to deliver the best subs we can!
Big, big thank you to Gustavaum for continuing to provide raws; you’re awesome. And super huge thank you to every “big name” out there who believed in us enough to put our name out there, especially O-T themselves! We absolutely will not let you down!
Enjoy the subs, and see you next game!
Can anybody link to a tutorial as to how to get the subs working? I’m totally lost

First of all know that you do not need to download the script unless you got the raw separately and don’t want to download the complete package. So if that’s your hangup, just download the completed file and go.
To actually play the video, do the following. Note that steps 1 and 2 are only necessary once per computer:
1. install CCCP (http://www.cccp-project.net/)
2. set .mkv files to open with MPC-HC (right click and hit “properties” on any .mkv file on a PC) (it may do this by default or during installation, it’s been a while since I’ve run the installer)
3. open the video and enjoy.

The HD video when bought up in Aegisub shows very tiny subs (unreadable). Wonder if they are encoding SD first, then muxing those subs for HD without increasing resolution…
The HD video should be used for subs………then make the SD.
Plays ok on vlc player, but to edit the subs, I have to convert the HD to SD, then apply the subs……
Also some of the fonts don’t show on video correctly since they are commercial font you must pay for……to even have on your computer.

Solid translation, looking forward to seeing what you guys do next. I have a few critiques that you’re free to ignore:
1. As a personal thing, I prefer the idea of the transformation sounds being put at the top of the screen so you don’t run into the issue of dialogue happening at the same time and text being stacked on top of each other.
2. When it comes to terminology, something about translating tensai as “genius” doesn’t feel quite right when Emu is called a genius gamer. Other ways that you could translate tensai are “prodigy” and “gifted”, which seem more fitting. Same goes for when Hiiro shows up and is called a tensai/gifted surgeon. That’s at least how I’ve been approaching those terms on my Ex-Aid blog.
3. More of a question in this case, were you making up a translation for Taddle Quest or is there some logic to it? It’s just repeating the same phrase “Tadoru meguru” twice, so I just took it as “Follow around”. Over-Time had this habit of taking too many liberties with transformation sounds during Ghost and I’d hope the same doesn’t end up happening with you guys as Ex-Aid goes on.
Oh and to chime in on the question about your Gashatto/Gacchan and so on, I kinda think it’d be simpler just to leave all those spoken sound effects (including the weapons) without subs. Since Ex-Aid is leaning hard into them, it means you’d have to do a lot more little subtitles and have a list to keep track of them all. Might be best to only acknowledge them when a character does, like when you had Ex-Aid go “Tadaaaa”.
I enjoyed what I go though, so if you don’t end up changing anything I’m still gonna keep checking this out!

They could always translate “tensai” as “wizard” and make a hilarious reference to the 1989 film “The Wizard” XD

“Gifted surgeon” is totally a turn of phrase in English. (Now I’m having City of Heroes flashbacks. “He is merely a gifted surgeon, and nothing more!”)

AH, also, about the onomatopoeia – I say leave it, but give a sub-text explanation of what it means at the top – at least the first few times.
Here’s hoping things keep going well for you guys – despite my aversion to downloading the subs, I’m really looking forwards to more Subbed Ex-Aid!

Translator notes, that being the subtext you mentioned that gets tacked on at the top to explain something that goes untranslated, are honestly incredibly lazy and take one even further out of the immersion than subtitles already do. Any decent subtitle group or company, whether fan done or official, will do everything possible to localize the subtitles and make them more understandable. Same goes for dubs. A good example of this is in the anime “Rurouni Kenshin”, where Kenshin uses a very old fashioned speech suffix, “de gozaru”. We don’t really have an exact English equivalent, so the closest thing was used in the English language version by adding “that I am” or “that it does” etc, giving off a very similar old fashioned and odd manner of speaking. Getting rid of it or leaving it untranslated with or without a translator note would have been a disservice to the English-speaking audience, as it helps to identify just what sort of a person Kenshin is via his manner of speaking.

My two cents for the Driver sound effects:
“Gashatto!” –> “Ka-chunk!” or “Gashat!” if you’re leaving the term “Rider Gashat” in there.
“GaCHAN!” –> “Kawhoosh!”
“Gashoon…” –> “Kachak!”
But I also see the argument for leaving them verbatim.
Also, here’s my suggestions for the Gashats we know of, rather than just leaving them as-is – I quite like what O-T did for the Eyecons in Ghost, which is where you take the sentiment rather than a direct translation, keeping the general feel of them.
I’ve tried to replicate that here, at least for the Gashats that have been released and we know the sounds for that aren’t just in English, including implicitly the names I’d use for the Gashats in subs:
Brave LV2 / Taddle Quest: “Journey on! Journey on! Journeying Quest!”
Lazer LV2 / Bakusou Bike: “Start it up! Kick it up! Rev it up! Line up! Roaring Bike!”
Genm LV1 / Proto-Mighty Action X: “Let’s Game! Bad Game! Cheating Game! What’s your name?! We are the Bugsters!”
Genm LV3 / Proto-Mighty Action X + Shakariki Sports: “[same as Mighty Action X] …Cheering, jeering, Evil! Evil! Let’s hear it! Let’s see it! Champion Sports!”
Shakariki Sports LV1: “Cheering! Leading! Oorah! Team spirit! Champion Sports!”
Gekitotsu Robot –> Fighting Robots
GiriGiri Chanbara –> Slashing Swordfight

I don’t think they should change the names that are on the carts in the call outs, but I do like where you’re going with it. Since Taddle Quest’s call out is just “Tadoru! Meguru!” twice, I do think using synonyms for those phrases would make it more interesting though, so that I agree with. The translation they went with not so much, as it’s not really about fighting or destiny so much as taking a journey or going on an adventure. So maybe “PURSUE THE JOURNEY! SEEK THE ADVENTURE! TADDLE QUEST!”

Also, 1) un-used to the reply system here, so apologies for the double-post.
and 2) @DJ Kinda…I, honestly, don’t like where you’re going with this. Takes too much away from the original, I feel.
Localization is good, but there’s some things that are Bad Ideas. Gotta strike a balance.
LikeLike
@Kett how does it take away from the original? “Tadoru” literally means “to follow (a road)” or “to pursue (a course)”, and “Meguru” means “to go around” or “patrol”. So it’s essentially just repeatedly screaming out things dealing with going on a journey, or quite literally, pursuing a quest.

Do we even know if the Gamer Driver and Shakariki Sports Gasshat will have different sounds for Gemn?
Personally, I’d avoid making their subs different unless they actually say something different. If it’s the same, LEAVE IT THE FREAK ALONE.

Agreed, I don’t know where one would even get those translations from what the belt system says. “Metcha” and “Mutcha” mean things like “extreme”, “crazy”, “absurd” etc. You can’t really get anything bad feeling out of those, and to translate the same thing as something COMPLETELY different wouldn’t be the best thing to do at all.
LikeLike
Yeah I agree with these translations, Onomatopoeia being replaced with the English equivalent (or close to it anyway) makes more sense to the viewers even if they’re not fully aware of Japanese. Another example the ‘Gaburencha’ from Kyoryuger which was translated as ‘Chompachomp’. It’s not a proper English word and clearly a sound which they’re just saying.

Solid effort for a (assuming) first sub 🙂 Bit rough around the edges but overall very much watchable. Noticed a few oddly worded lines, lines that were cut off too soon or too late (causing scenebleeds and making some lines a bit harder to catch). Hit me up if you’re interested in having another QC/Editor on the team.

Say, when Emu installed the Driver and the surrounding area changed, didn’t that woman say “the game area activated/generated” not “The level actually generated?”

There’s a lot of English words that are spoken but probably won’t be translated literally. For example, the Gashats are sometimes (in promotional material) referred to as “Game soft”, Soft/Software being what videos games are called in Japan. Similarly, the Bugsters are called a Computer Game Virus but they’re clearly meant to be video game themed, not computer themed. The Nintendo was called Famicom in Japan, or Family Computer, so I’d guess Computer is their word for consoles.
Point is, Japan’s English lingo isn’t completely identical to countries whose main language is English, so it makes sense to translate those words in a way that immediately clicks with us.

Well, haven’t gotten to see the subs yet myself, but… I would have to say that “the level actually generated” just sounds better.

I will definitely continue to tune in as you guys sub new episodes as they come out since overtime is skipping the series. I was sad about that but as long as quality people are translating like you guys then I am just fine with that especially with them subbing more of there own projects. So keep on doing what you did with this episode and I will see you guys every week as new episodes come out.

First of all: thank you so much for bringing Ex-Aid to non-Japanese fans!!!! I was a bit apprehensive when an “unknown” subbing team picked it up because I’m really used to the “major two” but as I watched it my worries went away!!! It’s perfect, a great translation!!!! Thank you so much again!!! (yes I’m very happy and EXCITEd, please don’t drop it midway!!!!)
Second: when the photobook/merch is released and if the romanizations differ (like Hosho/Houjo/Hojo, Emu’s name bugs me! ha, see what I did there?) do you plan to change your subs???

Thank you so much for doing this series!
I have one kind of silly request, if it’s at all possible: Is there any chance you could also release hardsubs? I’m only asking because my computer has weird issues with every video player except Totem, which is really bad with subtitles; it will only display them in the default font, at the bottom of the screen no matter where you want them placed, and will only display one subtitle at a time even if more than one is on-screen.
If hardsubs aren’t a possibility then I totally understand, and I won’t complain (I know enough Japanese to deal with it and to translate for anyone else viewing with me if it comes up), but it kind of takes me out of the immersion, you know? So I figured it couldn’t hurt to ask.

Finally got to see it on KissAsian… and I do think that your choices on translating the onomotopiea was very good – with the exception of “Tadaa!” for “Gakiin!”. That one, well, I think the intent was for more of a “slashing” sound or something.
Other than that, and one point of possible intention confusion when Asuna says Emu needs to transform into a Kamen Rider, I’d say this sub is pretty much golden bar some teething problems. STELLAR job for your first outing, I must say.

I think “SWISH UP!” for “GAKIIN!” would be good, kind of a mix of the English onomatopoeia “swish” and saying the weapon is “switching up”.

I really liked the subs, but just a couple points.
1. You should use a different font. Something like the one that MFC or O-T use would be better.
2. You should just leave the Gashat sound effects untranslated, but you did a good job choosing phrases that fitted the amount of syllables the sound effects had.
3. Instead of using “TADAA!” when the sword is unsheathed from the Gashacon Breaker use something like “KA-SHING!” instead
4. “Transformation Plus!” was a neat translation idea. Good job.
Love you guys and once again, very much looking forward to being with you.
